The variety has ancient origins from the Languedoc region, with records dating back to the 16th century. The crop belongs to the late ripening period and is characterized by low yields and sensitivity to fungal diseases and winter frosts. Currently, the variety is considered rare and of limited distribution.
Bunches are medium-sized, conical in shape with wings, and loose. Berries are medium-sized, egg-shaped or oval, black in color with thin skin and bloom. It is known by the synonyms Rivairenc or Ribeyrenc. It is not identical to the Aspiran Bouschet variety, which is a separate teinturier hybrid.
