Barbera Sarda N. is an autochthonous variety grown on the island of Sardinia. Genetic studies have confirmed the absence of a relationship with the Piedmontese variety Barbera, although in some regions of Sardinia, the variety may be found under local names, including Bovali Mannu.
The leaves of the variety are medium-sized, pentagonal, five-lobed, and deeply incised. The bunches are conical in shape and of medium density; the berries are small, round, and blue-black in color. The variety is late-ripening and retains high acidity even when harvested late.
The plant is susceptible to powdery mildew and the European grapevine moth. Wines produced from it possess high acidity but a deficiency in tannins; therefore, the variety is rarely used for the production of varietal wines, being employed mainly for balancing blends.
