The variety is of French origin and is historically associated with the Provence region. The grape is used for wine production and is permitted in certain appellations; fresh consumption is also permissible. It has a number of synonyms, including Barbarossa and Gros Barbaroux, but is genetically distinct from Italian varieties with similar names.
The plant has bisexual flowers and medium vigor. The leaf is medium to large, rounded or kidney-shaped. The bunches are large, broad-conical, and dense. The berries are medium to large, round in shape, with thick skin and succulent flesh with a simple flavor.
The variety matures at the end of September and is distinguished by high transportability. It is noted for a tendency toward high yield and a low degree of susceptibility to fungal diseases.
