Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety has been known in Piedmont since 1825. Genetic studies have confirmed that it is not related to the Barbera variety, despite the similarity in name, which is due to the morphological similarity of the bunches and berries. The exact origin of the variety has not been established.

The plant belongs to late-ripening varieties with moderate vine vigor. The variety is productive, has good resistance to downy mildew, but is susceptible to powdery mildew and grey mold. The berries are medium-sized, oblong in shape, and golden-yellow in color.

The purpose of the variety is the production of white wines. Due to high acidity, the grapes are suitable for creating sparkling wines. The finished wines have a straw-yellow color and aromas of citrus and stone fruits.
