Variety description

The variety has medium vigor, medium-sized compact clusters, and medium-sized berries with thick skins. It is traditionally cultivated in the Douro, Dão, Bairrada, and Tejo regions.

The variety is susceptible to downy mildew, but resistant to noble rot and tolerates drought and high temperatures well. It is used primarily in blends to provide structure and high acidity to wines; citrus and fruit notes dominate the aroma of the wines.

Genetically, the variety is not a synonym for Sercial, despite historical confusion in the names.
