The variety is an ancient local grape that was developed through folk selection in the vicinity of the town of Affile. The crop is late-ripening and demanding of growing conditions, requiring good sun exposure. The variety is sensitive to fungal diseases and is difficult to bring to full phenolic maturity.
Bunches are medium-sized, cylindro-conical, and moderately compact. Berries are medium or small in size, oval-shaped, dark purple in color with thick skin and a pronounced bloom. The leaves of this variety are smaller than those of Cesanese Comune.
The grape is used exclusively in winemaking for the production of complex red wines with aging potential. Wines from this variety exhibit aromas of cherry, berries, floral notes, and hints of spice. The variety is included in the list of varieties for a number of DOC and DOCG appellations.
