The variety belongs to late-maturing crops and is distinguished by the presence of a thick waxy skin on the berries. Cesanese Comune is considered more resistant to fungal diseases and pests, while Cesanese di Affile possesses smaller berries and a high keeping quality potential.

The plant is used exclusively for the production of red wines, including still, sparkling, and semi-sparkling beverages. Wines made from this variety are characterized by medium body, soft tannins, and pronounced fruity, floral, and earthy notes, while the variety is sensitive to aging techniques.
