The variety is autochthonous to the Loire Valley, where it has been cultivated since the 9th century. It is used exclusively for the production of a wide range of wines: from dry and semi-sweet to dessert and sparkling.
The vines possess high growth vigor, which requires regular training and pruning. The variety is characterized by early bud break, due to which it is at risk of damage by spring frosts, and is also susceptible to bunch rot and sunburn.
The grapes are distinguished by a high sugar content and high natural acidity, which provides the wines with potential for long-term aging. Organoleptic characteristics include notes of green apple, pear, quince, honey, beeswax, and mineral nuances.
