The variety is of Italian origin from the Lake Como region. The purpose of the variety is strictly industrial: the production of high-quality wines with a unique local character. Currently, it is grown on limited areas of about 17–20 hectares.
The plant is late-ripening and is considered quite sensitive. It is prone to moisture loss in berries and is susceptible to noble rot. There are breeding clones that possess increased resistance to diseases and more stable yields.
Wines from this variety possess a rigid structure and high acidity, which balances the sugar content. The aromatic profile includes floral and honey tones, as well as shades of quince and candied apricots, with good aging potential.
