The variety has ancient origins, presumably from the Gironde department, and is known by the synonyms Braucol, Mansois, and Pinenc. The vine is characterized by medium to strong growth, the leaves are five-lobed, and the bunches are compact and of medium size. The berries are black, small to medium in size, and covered with a thick skin.
Long pruning is recommended for cultivation due to the variety's tendency towards irregular fruit bearing and the specific characteristics of bud burst. The variety shows relative resistance to frost, but is susceptible to leafhopper infestation.
Wines from this variety possess good structure, pronounced tannins, and intense color. The aromatic profile may include both herbaceous notes and hints of red fruits and blackcurrants; the products are suitable for long-term aging.
