The variety is autochthonous to Tuscany and has a genetic link to Sangiovese. The plant is characterized by a late ripening period and high productivity. The leaves have a characteristic round shape, and the berries are distinguished by their dark color and high anthocyanin content.

The grape is considered a hardy variety; however, its dense clusters are prone to the risk of fungal diseases during high autumn humidity. In the past, the variety required special care to ensure crop quality; currently, it is used for both blended and single-varietal wines.

Wines from this variety are characterized as powerful and full-bodied, with pronounced tannin. Their flavor and aroma profile includes notes of blueberry, blackberry, black cherry, plum, violet, and mineral undertones.
