The variety belongs to the Lambrusco group and is of ancient Italian origin. It received its name due to the characteristic olive-like shape of the berries. The vine has high vigor and requires training using a trellis support.
In winemaking, the variety is used for the production of sparkling and semi-sweet wines. Due to its characteristics, it is most often used in blends with other Lambrusco varieties, providing the wine material with a deep ruby color and structure. With prolonged maceration, a slight bitterness may occur in the wine.
