The variety has a long history in the Reggio Emilia area, where it was historically confused with the Marzemino variety. It is known by the synonyms Lambrusco Bardi, Lambrusco Corbelli, and Lambrusco di Rivalta. The letter N. in the name indicates the black color of the berries.
The plant has large, thick leaves with deep incisions. The bunches are pyramidal in shape, often with wings. The berries are blue-black, oval, with thick skins. The variety belongs to the mid-season maturity group and is resistant to powdery mildew, heat, and drought.
The grapes accumulate a high level of sugar in the must. The wines produced have an intense ruby color and are rich in tannins, with pronounced notes of cherry, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and plum. The variety is an important component for wines with the protected designation Reggiano and Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa.
