Variety description

10 August 2026

The Lambrusco group of varieties includes more than a dozen varieties, such as Lambrusco di Sorbara, Lambrusco Grasparossa, and Lambrusco Salamino. These varieties are not clones of each other, although they share common ancestors and are not related to the American species Vitis labrusca. The group name originates from the Italian labrusco, which means "wild" or "weed."

Representatives of the group are used for the production of wines, including dry, sweet, still, and semi-sparkling (frizzante). The varieties are distinguished by high yield and low maintenance, although specific indicators depend on the biotype: for example, Lambrusco di Sorbara possesses high growth vigor but low yield due to flowering anomalies, while it demonstrates good winter hardiness and resistance to rot.

Wines from these varieties are characterized by freshness, vibrant fruitiness with notes of red berries, cherry, violet, and rose, as well as good acidity. Agronomic characteristics, such as the shape of the bunch (resembling salami in Lambrusco Salamino) or sensitivity to fungal diseases, vary depending on the specific variety within this family.
