The variety originates from the Piedmont region and is the result of a natural cross between the Crovin and Neretto di Marengo varieties. It has no relation to the Lambrusco family of varieties from Emilia-Romagna. The plant possesses high vigor, which requires green operations to control yields and ensure proper ripening.

The grapes are distinguished by high productivity and good resistance to diseases, including downy mildew and Botrytis. Drinks based on this variety have a medium body, moderate tannins, pronounced acidity, as well as notes of red berries, herbs, and earthy undertones. Historically, the variety has been used for creating blends.
