The variety has Italian origins and has been historically known since the 19th century. Its name derives from the shape of the berries, which resembles a spear tip. Currently, the variety is considered rare, with only small commercial plantings and individual century-old vines remaining in the Emilia-Romagna region.
Lanzesa B. is classified as a wine variety for the production of still and sparkling wines of DOP and IGP categories. The letter B in the name indicates the white color of the berries. The variety is independent and not identical to the Pecorino variety, with which it is sometimes mistakenly identified.
