The variety is indigenous to Hungary and was considered practically extinct after the phylloxera epidemic, preserved only as individual vines. It was reintroduced into cultivation through the propagation of genetic material from a research institute.

The grapes have small clusters and ripen well when yields are restricted, being distinguished by a high level of acidity at harvest. Wines produced from it possess a deep color, notes of red and black berries, as well as spicy undertones of black pepper and cloves, which makes them suitable for aging.
