The variety is a natural mutation of the Grenache Noir variety. The name "Pelut" refers to its characteristic feature — heavy pubescence on the underside of leaves and young shoots, which helps the plant retain moisture. Leaves are five-lobed, light green, clusters are medium to large in size, and dense. Berries are black, round or slightly oval, with thick skin.

The variety is a wine grape and is used for the production of red and rosé wines. It ripens somewhat earlier than the base variety Grenache Noir. Due to the pubescence of the leaves, the variety is considered less susceptible to rot and better tolerates strong winds and arid climates. Wines are characterized by notes of red fruits, spices, and pepper with moderate alcohol content.
