The variety is native to Portugal, likely originating from the Tejo region, and arose from a cross between the Malvasia Fina variety and an unknown variety. It is a wine grape variety used for the production of a wide range of white wines, from dry to sparkling and sweet, as well as for distillation.
The vine is characterized by vigorous growth. The variety buds early and ripens quickly, but is sensitive to frost, powdery mildew, and drought, which is why it develops best in warm and hot conditions.
The grapes have high aromatic intensity with notes of citrus, flowers, and spices. Due to early ripening, the variety quickly loses acidity, so wines made from it are usually intended for consumption at a young age.
