The variety is native to Cyprus, historically widespread, but over time it became almost forgotten. In the late 1980s, it was rediscovered and saved from extinction thanks to oenological research.
The vine has medium vigor, the flower type is female, which makes self-pollination impossible and requires proximity to other varieties. Bunches are medium or small, conical. Berries are medium-sized, round, black in color with thick skin. The yield of the variety is low and unstable; it is prone to flower drop and is sensitive to mold.
Maratheftiko is used to create high-quality red and rose wines with deep color and complex aromatics, including notes of cherry, dark berries, chocolate, spices, and pomegranate. The wines possess good structure, balanced acidity, and potential for long aging in oak barrels.
