The variety is a hybrid obtained in the 1920s as a result of a chance cross between the Glera and Cabernet Franc varieties. Its genetic relation to Cabernet Franc was confirmed by DNA analysis in 2010; prior to this, the involvement of Cabernet Sauvignon had been assumed.
The plant possesses winter hardiness. The leaf is medium to large in size, pentagonal in shape with three lobes. The cluster is medium-sized, compact, cylindrical or pyramidal. The berries are black in color, ellipsoidal or spheroidal in shape.
The wine products are characterized by soft tannins, a balanced fruity taste, and moderate acidity. The variety is used both for creating varietal wines and for blending.
