The variety is traditional for Portugal and is historically associated with the Alentejo region. It is used exclusively for the production of white wines, both varietal and in blends with other local varieties, such as Perrum and Rabo de Ovelha.

The mature leaf of the variety is large, rounded, five-lobed, and not wrinkled. The berries have white skin, which is reflected in the name by the letter B. There is a separate variety, Manteúdo Preto, with black berries, and Manteúdo B itself has local synonyms, including Manteúdo Branco.
