The variety is a relative of the Tannat variety and is genetically related to the Baroque, Courbu blanc, Lauzet, and Petit Courbu varieties, but is not related to Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng. Bud fertility at the base of the shoots is low, which requires long pruning given the high vigor of the bushes.
The flower is hermaphroditic. Leaves are rounded, mostly five-lobed, slightly dissected, with medium density pubescence on the underside. Clusters are small or medium, dense, cylindrical or cylindro-conical in shape. Berries are small, round, dark blue in color with a thick waxy bloom and medium-thick skin.
The variety is of mid-late ripening and is considered relatively resistant to downy mildew. Wines made from it are characterized by high tannin and acid content.
