Variety description

10 August 2026

The name Malvoisier is historically linked to the Italian term Malvasia. In the past, it was used to refer to a multitude of different, predominantly white varieties supplied to Europe. Research shows that genetically unrelated plants may be hidden under this name.

In a number of cases, the term Malvoisier was used incorrectly. For example, Californian vineyards, which had been called Black Malvoisier for decades, turned out to be the Cinsaut variety after genetic testing. This name is also found in the synonyms for the Trollinger variety.

There is a specific case of using the term for the Malvoisie lasserrazienne variety. It is a rare wine variety with a medium ripening period, a functionally female flower type, and a five-lobed leaf. In other cases, genetic analysis is required to establish identification.
