The name «Malvasia» encompasses a group of dozens of different grape varieties that do not have a close genetic relationship. Most of them are wine varieties, possess high fertility, require yield control, and are characterized by susceptibility to fungal diseases and frost. They are used for the production of a wide range of wines, from dry and sparkling to dessert and fortified.

In the Swiss canton of Valais, the name «Malvoisie» is officially established for the Pinot Gris variety. This variety is a genetic mutation of Pinot Noir, is grown on sunny slopes, and is often used for the production of sweet wines from overripe grapes, including those affected by noble rot. The variety is considered relatively susceptible to downy mildew.
