The variety belongs to the extensive Malvasia family and is a local Spanish grape. Genetic studies indicate its possible identity with the Alarije variety. Work is underway in the Rioja region to preserve the various biotypes of this variety.

Varieties of the Malvasia group prefer a dry climate and can be susceptible to gray mold in high humidity conditions. The grape is characterized by a fruit-bearing capacity that requires yield control to maintain product quality.

The grape is used in winemaking, most often as a component of blends with Viura and Garnacha Blanca varieties. Wines made from it are distinguished by good acidity, a mineral finish, pronounced aromatic intensity, and fruit notes.
