The variety is a product of natural crossing of the varieties Cayetana Blanca and Alfrocheiro. It has many synonyms, such as Moreto, Mureto, Negro Moura, and Pinheira Roxa. There is a pink-berried mutation known as Malvasia Preta Roxa.
The plant is a late-maturing variety characterized by high yield. The variety is susceptible to powdery mildew and grey mold. Intended exclusively for winemaking, the produced wines possess a deep color and aging potential.
