The variety is small-berried and has been known since the late 16th century. It received its name «Puntinata», meaning "spotted", due to the characteristic dark dots that appear on the surface of the berries during the ripening process. In modern farms, the vines are grown on volcanic soils using Guyot training.
The crop ripens by mid-September. The grapes are used exclusively in winemaking, allowing for the creation of wines with a floral and fruity aromatic profile, mineral tones, and pronounced acidity. The variety is actively cultivated in the Castelli Romani zone in the vicinity of Rome.
