Variety description

The variety is a natural hybrid with perfect flowers. The leaf is round, five-lobed, weakly or moderately incised with slight pubescence on the underside. The bunch is medium-sized, cylindrical or cylindrical-conical in shape, dense or of medium density. The berry is small or medium, round, dark blue in color with thick skin and a heavy waxy bloom.

The variety belongs to the medium-late maturity group, is characterized by high vine vigor and medium yield. It is characterized by low resistance to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and grey mold, as well as to frost. DNA analyses confirm the identity of the Malvasia nera di Lecce and Malvasia nera di Brindisi varieties.

Wines made from this variety have a harmonious taste with velvety tannins, aromas of blackberry, black cherry, violet, tobacco and licorice with moderate acidity and alcohol content. The variety is often used in blends, especially with Negroamaro and Susumaniello, and less frequently for the production of varietal wines.
