Variety description

The variety is an independent Portuguese autochthon known since the 16th century. The vines have medium vigor. The leaf is medium-sized, rounded, five-lobed, with dense cobwebby pubescence on the underside. The bunch is medium or large, cylindro-conical, compact, and lumpy. The berry is medium, oval-shaped, greenish-white, covered with a thin waxy bloom, and possesses medium-firm flesh and a simple flavor.
The variety is an early-maturing cultivar; the berries reach ripeness in the first ten days of September. The sugar content is 18–24 g/100 cm³, and the acidity is 5.5–7.5 g/dm³. Yields can be high but are often unstable due to a tendency for ovary shedding. The variety is sensitive to low temperatures and fungal diseases, especially powdery mildew, and is moderately susceptible to downy mildew and grey mold.
It is used for the production of high-quality table and fortified wines, particularly Madeira and white port, as well as sparkling wines in cool regions. On the island of Madeira, the variety is known by the synonym Boal (or Bual).
