The variety is a natural hybrid of Malvasia Bianca Lunga and Negroamaro. Modern genetic studies confirm the identity of Malvasia nera di Lecce and Malvasia nera di Brindisi. The plant has moderate vigor and upright shoots.

The leaves of the variety are medium to large in size, five-lobed. Bunches are cylindrical-conical, of medium density. Berries are medium-sized, round, dark blue in color, with thin skin and a waxy bloom. The pulp is juicy, the taste is harmonious and neutral.

The variety is characterized by low resistance to powdery mildew and moderate winter hardiness. Yield is stable, medium. It prefers a Mediterranean climate and medium-loam soils, suitable for mechanized cultivation.

Wines from this variety have a ruby color, moderate alcohol content, and low acidity. The variety is used in blends to soften the harshness of other wines, such as Negroamaro, as well as to create DOC category rosé wines.
