The variety is autochthonous to the coastal part of Croatia and is particularly common in Dalmatia, on the islands of Korčula and Lastovo, and on the Pelješac peninsula. Genetic studies have confirmed the identity of Maraština with the Malvasia Bianca Lunga variety.

Maraština is classified as a wine grape variety and is used to produce various types of wines, ranging from dry to dessert. The wines feature a color ranging from greenish-yellow to golden-yellow and have pronounced aromas of stone fruits and citrus. The variety is characterized by high acidity and has historically been used for drying berries on the vine.
