The variety is a hybrid of Schiava Grossa and Muscat of Alexandria varieties. According to one hypothesis, it was bred in the mid-1830s in the greenhouses of Hamburg, after which it reached England and spread throughout the world.
The berries have a dark blue or black color; the bunches are usually medium-sized and loose. A high content of terpenoids in the berry composition causes an intense muscat taste and aroma with floral and fruity notes. The letter 'N' in the ampelographic classification denotes the black color of the berry skin.
