The variety is autochthonous to Sicily, where it has been cultivated for centuries in the vicinity of Catania and Messina. The name Mantellato is associated with the shape of the leaves, which cover the clusters. The grape belongs to the mid-late maturity group, with harvest occurring in early to mid-October. It is well-adapted to volcanic soils and high-altitude conditions, and is sensitive to spring frosts.
The leaf is large, five-lobed. The cluster is small or medium-sized, cylindrical, compact, and often winged. The berry is small, round, dark blue or blue-black in color with a heavy bloom. The wines possess good acidity, a soft structure, delicate tannins, and aromas of red berries, cherry, and floral notes.
