The variety is intended for winemaking and is most often used in combination with Nerello Mascalese. Externally, the plant leaf is round, five-lobed, and slightly incised. The bunches are characterized as small, cylindrical, and dense, externally resembling a pine cone. The berries are small, round, and dark blue in color with a thick waxy bloom.
The flower is hermaphroditic. The plant possesses good yield and resistance to unfavorable atmospheric conditions and infections. The variety enters the budding phase early, which makes it vulnerable to spring frosts. The ripening period is late, usually occurring in mid-October.
