Nerello mascalese is a variety with high vine vigor. The leaf is large, five-lobed, moderately incised, with a pubescent underside. The flower is hermaphrodite. The cluster is large, conical or pyramidal in shape, and of medium density. The berry is medium-sized, slightly oval or ellipsoid in shape, light blue with a purple hue and bloom, and has thick, firm skin.

The variety is a product of the natural cross between Sangiovese and Mantonico bianco. It is relatively resistant to fungal diseases, but susceptible to powdery mildew and Botrytis. Yield is high but unstable. A wine variety intended for the production of wines with pronounced acidity and minerality, it is used for both monovarietal wines and blends.
