The variety is genetically identical or closely related to the Sangiovese variety. The vines possess good growth vigor. Young leaves have a yellowish color with a bronze tint; mature leaves are entire or five-lobed, wedge-shaped, with an open U-shaped petiole sinus. Bunches are medium-sized.
The variety is of medium-late ripening: bud burst occurs 1 day before the Chasselas variety, and berry ripening occurs 3.5 weeks after it. It adapts well to low-fertility clay-limestone soils and is drought tolerant.
The variety is sensitive to flavescence dorée, moderately susceptible to powdery mildew, and highly susceptible to grey mold. It is used for the production of full-bodied, tannic, fruity wines, as well as high-quality rosé wines.
