Pinot blanc is an old grape variety that originated as a result of a natural point mutation of Pinot noir. The vines are characterized by medium to high vigor, with leaves that are predominantly three-lobed. The clusters are of medium size, dense, and conical in shape. The berries are medium-sized, round, and turn greenish-white or greenish-golden upon ripening.
The variety has an early ripening period and is distinguished by high yield. It is susceptible to powdery mildew and gray mold, and possesses winter hardiness in the range of –19...–22°C. Wines produced from this variety have fresh acidity and aromas of apple, pear, citrus, and nuts. The grapes are often used in blends with Chardonnay or Auxerrois.
