The variety Rossara N. (where N. stands for black berry color) is a spontaneously emerged autochthonous variety, historically grown in the regions of Reggio Emilia, Lombardy, and Trentino. It is intended exclusively for winemaking. Historical publications note that the variety has the advantage of early ripening.
Currently, the variety is considered rare, and data on its modern production performance is practically absent. Various genetic types may be hidden under the name Rossara, which requires the use of molecular markers for accurate identification. The variety often faces problems of synonymy and homonymy in literature, and is sometimes erroneously linked to the variety Schiava N.
