The variety belongs to the mid-to-mid-late maturity group. The plant forms large, five-lobed, deeply incised leaves. Bunches are medium to large in size, pyramidal in shape, and of moderate density. Berries are medium to small, ellipsoid, blue-black in color with a waxy bloom.
The variety is considered delicate, demanding of soil drainage, and sensitive to excessive moisture. It is cultivated primarily in bush form (alberello) on steep terraced slopes, which requires manual labor. The vines are characterized by high longevity; there are known cases of vineyards in operation over 100 years old.
Intended exclusively for winemaking. The resulting wines are characterized by a pale color, high acidity, and soft tannins. The aromatic profile is dominated by notes of Mediterranean herbs and flowers; a mineral or saline undertone is often present.
