Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety has a genetic connection to Nebbiolo and has been cultivated since at least the 17th century. It belongs to late ripening groups. The plant is characterized by vigorous growth and requires careful pruning.

The grapes have good resistance to frosts and spring frosts, but exhibit sensitivity to powdery mildew and gray mold. The dark-colored berries contain a moderate level of sugar, which results in a low alcohol level in finished wines.

In winemaking, the variety is almost always used in blends, for example in Valtellina DOC and Alpi Retiche IGT wines. Finished wines are characterized by high acidity, soft tannins, and aging potential.
