The variety belongs to the Western European ecological-geographical group and is considered one of the oldest crops in Europe. The vine features growth ranging from medium to vigorous, with round, thick, 3- or 5-lobed, funnel-shaped leaves. Young shoots are covered with dense tomentose pubescence.
Bunches are small or medium, most often compact. Berries are small, round-shaped, with thick skin and a color ranging from pale pink to brownish-red. The variety is of the medium or medium-late ripening period, is demanding regarding growing conditions, and is sensitive to fungal diseases and drought.
A wine variety highly valued for its ability to accumulate sugar and its rich terpene composition, which gives wines intense rose and spice aromas. Genetically identical to the Gewürztraminer variety, which is why these names often appear as synonyms in literature.
