The variety is named for the reddish-bronze hue of its young shoots and leaf tips. The leaves are medium-sized, heart-shaped, deeply lobed with red veins and cobwebby pubescence on the underside. The bunches are dense, conical, and medium-sized. The berries are round or oval, green-yellow in color, and juicy.
The variety is a mid-to-late ripening variety, demanding of heat and sunny sites. The plant is sensitive to spring frosts, downy mildew, powdery mildew, and grey mold due to the density of the bunches. Under favorable conditions, the variety demonstrates high yield.
Wines from Rothgipfler are characterized by high extract content and balanced acidity. The bouquet of young wines is dominated by aromas of peach, apricot, melon, and pear, while notes of baked apple and spices emerge during aging. The variety is used both for single-varietal wines and in blends.
