The variety is the result of a natural cross between Pinot and Gouais blanc, which makes it a close relative of Chardonnay, Aligote, and Gamay. Historically, it was widespread in the Chablis area, however, after the phylloxera epidemic, its plantings were massively replaced by Sauvignon Blanc.
The plant is characterized by vigorous growth and forms small-sized clusters. The variety is characterized by low and unstable yields, as well as high susceptibility to powdery mildew and Botrytis cinerea. Despite its disappearance from commercial production, it is included in official EU variety catalogs as part of the genetic heritage.
