The variety is an interspecific hybrid (PIWI variety), the pedigree of which includes American species of the genus Vitis, such as V. riparia, V. rupestris, and V. berlandieri. It belongs to blue-berried wine grape varieties intended for winemaking.
Ruby Pinot belongs to medium ripening varieties. DNA marker studies have confirmed the presence in the variety of several resistance loci to downy mildew, including Rpv3, Rpv7, Rpv11, and Rpv12.
