The variety is considered ancient and rare, and its origin has not been precisely established. Genetic analyses have not revealed close relatives among other grape varieties. The plant is characterized as sensitive, requiring careful maintenance, and has low yields.
The grapes have a dark skin which is distinguished by its thinness, due to which the variety is susceptible to rot and requires caution during cultivation and harvesting. Wines made from it possess pronounced acidity, palpable tannins, and an intense aromatic profile with notes of roses, violets, geraniums, spices, and wild berries.
