The variety is autochthonous to the border regions of Spain and Portugal. Genetically, it originated from a natural crossing of an unknown variety with the Molar variety. The plant has a mid-late ripening period and requires careful maintenance due to low resistance to fungal diseases, such as downy mildew, powdery mildew, and Botrytis, as well as low winter hardiness.
Bunches are small, dense or medium-dense. Berries are small, round, black in color with thin skin and a thick bloom. Wines are characterized by high acidity, soft tannins, and aromas of red berries, wild herbs, and violet. The variety is known by a number of synonyms, including Tinta Pinheira and Penamacor.
