The variety belongs to the Burgundy family, has medium vigor and a semi-upright growth habit. Leaves are pentagonal, with medium or weak lobing. Clusters are medium-sized, cylindrical, and very dense. Berries are small or medium, round or slightly elongated, with skin ranging from gray to reddish-brown in color.
The plant is resistant to winter frosts, but due to the high density of the clusters, it is susceptible to grey mold and sour rot. To achieve high-quality yields, yield restriction and green operations are required. The variety prefers warm slopes with deep soils.
A wine grape variety capable of accumulating significant amounts of sugar. Historically, full-bodied, often sweet wines were released under the name "Ruländer," including those produced from grapes with "noble rot," whereas modern dry wines from this variety are more often labeled as "Grauburgunder."
