Rufete is a natural variety cultivated for centuries. It is genetically related to such varieties as Touriga Nacional and Prieto Picudo, and is sometimes considered the result of a natural cross between the Perepinhão Portalegre and Tinta Madeira varieties.
The plant possesses medium vigor; medium-sized bunches consist of rounded dark blue berries with thin skin and a waxy bloom. The variety is considered delicate, with low resistance to downy mildew and powdery mildew. The maturity group varies from late-ripening to a short-cycle ripening variety depending on the region.
It is used exclusively in winemaking both for blends and for creating single-varietal wines. It is characterized by moderate alcohol content and aromas of red berries, spices, field herbs, and floral notes.
