The variety is autochthonous to Central Europe and genetically descends from Pinot Noir. The name Saint Laurent is associated with August 10, the period when berry coloration begins. Wines from this variety are distinguished by deep color, silky tannins, and good aging potential.

The variety is one of the key ones for the winemaking of the Czech Republic and Austria. Widely known under the synonyms Svatovavřinecké, Sankt Laurent and Saint Laurent.
